Medical Acupuncture

Medical Acupuncture can also be known as Dry Needling. Acupuncture is the process of affecting muscle and fascia through needles.

First, let us explain what the difference is between Acupuncture and Medical Acupuncture.

Acupuncture is a form of TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) and has been around for thousands of years. Consequently, there are many approaches to learning and practising it. Furthermore, Acupuncture can be varied in its uses from Muscular Issues through to psychological issues. For example, it can help people with issues around Stress, anxiety, fertility, ibs and much more.

Medical Acupuncture, however, is the term used to describe acupuncture performed by a doctor or highly trained practitioner such as Physiotherapist, Osteopath or Sports Therapist. As such Medical Acupuncture usually incorporates a range of other soft tissue techniques aside from Needling to effect change and aid in the recovery of a musculoskeletal injury.

It is therefore more specifically focused rather than used on large areas of the body.

Benefits of Medical Acupuncture

Medical Acupuncture offers benefits and influence over three main areas of health care:

  • assisting in the promotion of health and well-being
  • aiding in the prevention of illness
  • treatment of numerous medical conditions.

While acupuncture is often associated with pain control, in the hands of a properly-trained practitioner it has much broader applications. For example, in the repair and recovery and a number of muscular-skeletal injuries and health concerns. Furthermore, it can be effective as the only treatment used, or as part of a wider series of treatments in many medical and surgical disorders. The WHO (World Health Organisation) recognises the use of acupuncture in the treatment of a wide range of medical problems, including:

  • Digestive disorders such as IBS, Gastritis, Constipation and Diarrhoea.
  • Respiratory disorders such as Bronchitis, Asthma etc.
  • Neurological Disorders such as Migraines and Headaches etc
  • Muscular Tightness and Pain such as Neck Pain, Back Pain, Limb Pain, Frozen Shoulder, Tennis & Golfers Elbow, various forms of tendinitis, Sciatica, osteoarthritis and much more.

Medical Acupuncture is particularly useful in resolving physical problems related to tension and stress and emotional conditions.
